CAUSBY CLASSIC: Freedom, Draughn, Patton reach semifinals

MORGANTON – Three Burke County baseball teams – Freedom, Draughn and Patton – won on the opening day of the Tony Causby Classic at Patton.

Freedom slipped by Chase 5-4 in eight innings to open the tournament before R-S Central won 9-2 to hand Bandys its seventh straight loss.

Draughn nipped West Caldwell 7-6 and, in the nightcap, Patton pounded East Burke 10-3.

Today’s semifinals at Patton are Freedom (5-11) against R-S Central (14-3) at 4:30 p.m. ad Draugn (11-5) facing Patton (6-13) at 7 p.m.

In consolation games today, Bandys (3-14-1) meets Chase (1-15) at 11:30 a.m., followed at 2 p.m. by East Burke (2-15) against West Caldwell (8-19).

There are four games scheduled on Wednesday – seventh place at 11:30 a.m., fifth place at 2 p.m., third place at 4:30 p.m. and championship at 7 p.m.

The tournament is raising funds for ALS research with the gate revenue going to Patton’s baseball program and also for research for ALS.
