LEWIS

Hibriten High had 35 unanswered points in the opening quarter on Friday night – scoring twice on interception returns – to roll past Ashe County 42-7 on the road.

Staying unbeaten at 3-0, the Panthers collected the 60th win for Clay Lewis since he became head coach eight years ago. He reached that plateau faster than any head football coach in school history.

Gee Witherspoon and Aaron Logan each ran for two touchdowns to spark Hibriten, which plays its next game Friday night at home against South Caldwell (7:30 p.m.)

Logan started the scoring with a 6-yard run and his second TD run of 46 yards came after Noah Haney had returned an interception for a score and Witherspoon tacked on a 34-yard TD run. Logan’s second TD put the Panthers ahead 28-0.

Miles Simon returned an interception 60 yards to push Hibriten’s lead to 35-0 and Witherspoon’s 65-yard TD with 11 minutes in the third quarter made it 42-0.

Hibriten improved to 8-0 against Ashe County with its fifth straight road win in the series.

Watauga 49, Avery County 8

Fullback Bryce Satterfield ran for 151 yards and five TDs, all in the first half, as the visiting Pioneers won to start the season 3-0.

Satterfield scored three TDs from the 1 and added scoring runs of 2 and 4 yards to push Watauga (3-0) to a 42-0 lead by halftime.

The five TDs is one shy of the Watauga single-game record shared by Eric Breitenstein and Evan Suggs.

Satterfield, a sophomore, left the game early in the third quarter, finishing with 14 carries for 152 yards. He had 50 yards on one first-quarter carry.

Watauga averaged 10.5 yards per play en route to dropping Avery County to 1-2.

“We didn’t give them a chance to make plays,” Watauga head coach Ryan Habich told WATA radio after the game. “You make them punt and get the ball back to the offense.

“We’ve got a chance to be pretty good.”

Watauga goes for a 4-0 start on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. when it plays Wilkes Central in Boone.

Ashbrook 18, East Lincoln 3

British Brooks ran for 192 yards and the opening TD as Ashbrook toppled the visiting Mustangs.

Brooks scored on a 4-yard run in the first quarter and it was 6-3 the half after East Lincoln (0-2) kicked a field goal.

Bobby Watson scored a defensive TD and Ashbrook’s defense closed the scoring with another TD to pick up the first win for Green Wave head coach Brian Andrews.

Ashbrook (1-2) had 284 yards of total offense.

The loss left new East Lincoln head coach David Lubowicz still in pursuit of his first career win.

The Mustangs, who went 41-4 in the previous three seasons, play their home opener on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. against North Gaston.
