High school athletics return on Monday afternoon – with the Greater Hickory area having one less league than a year ago – as statewide realignment and new conferences kick in.
Last August, the last of four years began for the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A, Northwestern 3A-4A, South Mountain Athletic 2A-3A and the North Piedmont 3A-4A.
On Monday afternoon, some of the teams from the South Fork 2A, Northwestern Foothills 2A and a reworked Northwestern 3A-4A crank up their seasons.
These are the varsity fall sports in those conferences: football, volleyball, boys’ soccer, girls’ tennis, cross country (girls and boys) and girls’ golf.
It will be a while before the first conference match-ups are played:
Football: The season opens on Friday, and the first conference games in all three new leagues are Sept. 22.
Volleyball: The Northwestern Foothills 2A schedule begins on Aug. 28 and the South Fork 2A and Northwestern 3A-4A matches begin the next day.
Boys’ soccer: The first conference matches in all three new leagues are scheduled to begin on Sept. 11.
Girls’ tennis: The first conference playing dates for the Northwestern Foothills 2A and Northwestern 3A-4A are set for Sept. 13, with the South Fork 2A’s schedule starting the next day.
Girls’ golf: Northwestern 3A-4A teams begin league play on Aug. 29, South Fork 2A teams on Sept. 5 and Northwestern Foothills 2A teams on Sept. 6.
Non-conference games and matches begin this week and the girls’ golf and cross country seasons, for the most part, won’t begin until early next month.
