GREENSBORO – The East All-Stars defeated the West on Monday night 74-71 at the Greensboro Coliseum in girls’ basketball despite a combined 10 points from the Greater Hickory area’s two 2016 prep seniors playing for the West.
Abby Cook of Alexander Central scored five points, hitting 2-of-7 shot (one a 3-pointer), and Freedom’s Ariyana Williams added five points on 1-of-10 field goals and by hitting two free throws.
The other West player from an area league, the South Mountain Athletic 2A, was Kyra Davis of R-S Central, and she scored a team-high 16 points.
The East led 13-11 through the first eight minutes before the West had a 25-point second quarter to lead 36-31 at the half.
The game was tied after three quarters, and the East outscored the West 19-16 in the fourth quarter to win behind game MVP Kayla Jones of Riverside-Martin.
Nyona Shields of Union Pines added 11 points from the East, Jasmine McBride of Lumberton scored 10 and Jaylin Powell of Rolesville scored nine points.
The East hit 20-of-31 free throws with Jones and Shields combining to hit 10-of-15.
Cook and Williams went 1-for-10 from 3-point range for the West girls, who were 6-of-23 from that range.
Jones led all rebounders with 13 and she also had a team-best four assists.
