CRAWDADS: Drive pitching combines on 5-hitter to win morning game

HICKORY – The Greenville (S.C.) Drive kept the Hickory Crawdads’ bats in check on Wednesday morning, limiting them to five hits in a 5-3 win in South Atlantic League (SAL) baseball at L.P. Frans Stadium.

Greenville (35-23) came from a run down to gain a 3-2 lead with two runs in the fifth inning, added a run in the sixth and got a ninth-inning home run by Chris Madera to win Game 2 of a three-game series.

The Drive and Crawdads (23-36) close the series on Thursday night at 7 p.m., and Lexington, Ky., then visits Hickory for a four-game series that begins on Friday night at 7 p.m.

Reliever Robby Sexton (1-5) came in after Drive starter Darwinzon Hernandez threw one inning, and Sexton held Hickory to two hits over six innings. He walked none and struck out five.

Stephen Nogosek picked up his 11th save of the season when he got the Crawdads 1-2-3 in the ninth inning to finish his two innings. He gave up one hit and one run (earned) with no walks and two strikeouts.

Tyler Hill went 3-for-5 and drove in a run and Ryan Scott had two hits and two RBIs for Greenville, whose first four in the batting order combined to go 9-for-17.

Franklin Rollin led Hickory with two hits, including his third home run of the season in the eighth inning, and Carlos Garay added two hits and two RBIs for the Crawdads.

A crowd of 3,625 fans saw Hickory starter Edgar Arrendono (2-3) take a loss. He pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up eight hits, three runs (all earned) with one walk and four strikeouts.

Greenville grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Hill’s run-scoring double.

The Crawdads scored on a two-run single by Garay in the bottom of the first inning. It came after a two-out single by Yanio Perez and walks to Ti’Quan Forbes and Alex Kowalczky.

Scott’s two-run single in the fifth inning put Greenville up 3-2, and Santiago Espinal’s RBI single in the sixth inning made it 4-2.

Rollin’s home run in the eighth inning got Hickory within 4-3 before Madera homered in the ninth – his third of the season – to put the Drive up 5-3.
