Trae Starnes checked Burke County on four hits over six innings and Grayson Chapman drove in three runs to lead visiting Taylorsville Post 170 to a 13-3 victory on Tuesday night in American Legion baseball.
Starnes gave up three runs in the win – but they were all unearned – and he walked one and struck out seven as Taylorsville improved to 4-0 in Area IV play with a win at Shuey Field in Morganton.
Post 170 had 12 hits, including two each by Starnes, Tyler Campbell and Kyler Fairchild, and ran away from Burke County with an eight-run third inning that built a lead of 10-1.
Burke County got hits from Will Kirk, Tripp Causby, Ty Causby and Dylan Poplin in the loss. Tripp Causby had two RBIs.
Derek Dyson and Fairchild each drove in two runs for Taylorsville and one of Starnes’ hits was a triple.
There were seven hit by pitches in a game that drew a crowd of 63 and was completed in two hours, seven minutes.
Taylor Pope pitched the seventh inning for Post 170 while Burke County used four pitchers with starter Troy Shepherd taking the loss. He pitched two innings, giving up six hits, eight runs (all earned) with a walk and a strikeout.
Ben Burns, the third Burke County pitcher, went three innings. He gave up four hits, three runs (all earned) with no walks and one strikeout.
Taylorsville is scheduled to play Rutherford County at home on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. (at Alexander Central High) in its final game of this week.
Burke County is scheduled to play Hickory Post 48 in Morganton at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Shuey Field.
Lincoln County 8, Maiden 6: Jordan Easter doubled twice and tripled and Lane Hoover had four hits, leading Lincoln County to a victory on Tuesday night at East Lincoln High.
Maiden dropped to 3-5 and has lost five straight since a 3-0 start with a doubleheader sweep over Huntersville and a win at Kings Mountain.
Maiden is scheduled to play Thursday at Cherryville at 7 p.m., and Lincoln County is scheduled to face Gastonia on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
