HICKORY – This year’s Sophomore Night could be big for the Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) women’s basketball team.
The Red Hawks (21-3, 15-1 Region X) will put a 13-game win streak on the line on Thursday night in a 6 p.m. game against Louisburg College at the Tarlton Complex.
CVCC is fresh off a significant win in a battle of the top two teams in Region X, beating Bryant & Stratton College 60-46 on Sunday in Virginia Beach, Va.
Freshman Ivy Eller, a former Newton-Conover High start, scored a team-high 17 points to lead Sunday’s victory that put CVCC alone atop the Region X standings. Sophomore forward Sherry Johnson added 14 points for the Red Hawks.
The Bobcats (20-4, 14-2) led throughout the first half, by 14-11 after one quarter and 31-27 at the half.
Tiara Williams scored a game-high 18 points for Bryant & Stratton, 12 in the first half.
CVCC went ahead for good in the second half, outscoring the Bobcats 33-15 in the half and 17-10 in the third quarter.
Eller spearheaded the second-half CVCC run with 11 points and Johnson had 10 in the half.
Leading 44-41 entering the fourth quarter, the Red Hawks pulled away late with a 16-5 run.
