McGeachy died in Feb. of 2018 at age 75.

“We are thrilled to learn that Neill McGeachy has been selected to be inducted into the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame,” LRU athletic director Kim Pate said in a press release by the school. “Neill dedicated his entire young and professional life to champion sport and had a profound impact on countless individuals, most notably on LRU and the broader Hickory community.”

McGeachy, a native of Charlotte, was a three-sport athlete at LRU before graduating in 1965. He was the university’s athletic director for 14 years starting in 2002.

While McGeachy was AD at LRU, the Bears won 38 South Atlantic Conference (SAC) regular season titles and 14 conference tournament titles. They also added eight new sports: men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s swimming and men’s and women’s lacrosse.

LRU launched building the Neill McGeachy Sports Performance Center last August, and it should be completed by August of this year.

The other 11 picks for the NCSHF’s Class of 2019 are NASCAR standout Dale Earnhardt, Jr.; golf pro Davis Love III; Ernie Barnes; Willie Bradshaw; Eddie Bridges; Rod Broadway; Gene Corrigan; Steve Gabriel; Dee Kantner; Paul Miller and Thell Overman.
