HICKORY – The Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) women, off to a 6-2 start, are idle until to 2019.
Visiting Bryant & Stratton edged the Red Hawks 70-63 in their last game (on Sunday), and CVCC won’t play again this season.
The Red Hawks’ next game is Jan. 2 on the road, a make-up contest against Walters State at 5:30 p.m. in Morristown, Tenn.
The Red Hawks are 2-2 in Region X after the loss.
Sophomore Sherry Johnson had a double-double – 17 points and 19 rebounds – and freshman Aniya Taylor had 16 points in the Sunday loss. It was Johnson’s fifth double-double of the season.
CVCC led Bryant & Stratton by as many as 10 points in the opening half and still led 30-29 at intermission.
The Bobcats (10-0, 7-0) capitalized on CVCC’s foul trouble in the third quarter, going on an 8-0 run to gain a lead for the first time.
Taylor scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half, but CVCC made just 24 of its 64 field goal attempts (37.5 percent) and could not rally.
Serenity Turnbull and Tyriyanna Owens both scored 13 points to lead the Bobcats.
