MARS HILL – Carlo Pere’s free kick in the 62nd minute on Wednesday night carried Mars Hill past visiting Lenoir-Rhyne University in men’s soccer, giving the Lions their first win over the Bears since 2014.
The loss dropped LRU to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) while the Lions improved to 4-2, 1-1.
LRU scored on a penalty kick by Florian Simon for a 1-0 lead. It was Simon’s second goal of the season.
Mars Hill tied it 1-all in the 22nd minute, getting rebound goal by Adnan Saltagic.
Pere’s game-winner came about 40 minutes later.
Ruben Morillas got three shots on goal for LRU, including a final one in the closing seconds that sailed just wide.
LRU had a 12-7 edge in shots and led in corner kicks 6-1.
Mars Hill won despite three yellow cards and 13 fouls.
The Bears’ next match is Saturday at 3:30 p.m., a league contest at Newberry, S.C.
