HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) has cancelled a volleyball tournament appearance this weekend in New York due to the threat of Hurricane Florence.

CVCC said in a press release Tuesday it won’t make the trip to New Rochelle, N.Y., to play in the Monroe College Invitational.

The Red Hawks were scheduled to fly out of Charlotte on Wednesday.

“With the change in the storm last night, we are concerned for the safety of players traveling as well as the return in a timely and safe manner,” CVCC Athletic Director Nicholas Schroeder said in the press release.

The CVCC volleyball team had originally planned to fly out Thursday and play on Friday and Saturday.

With Florence shifting further south early Wednesday morning, a decision was made by CVCC officials to cancel the trip.

The Red Hawks return to action on Monday when they travel to USC Lancaster for a conference road match at 6 p.m.
