Come out on Saturday and enjoy a day remembering and honoring the late Pat Wimberly’s contributions to youth baseball and softball in his community.
It’s another opening day for teams in the Balls Creek Optimist, Sherrills Ford Optimist and Maiden Recreation Department programs and begins at 8:45 a.m. at Balls Creek Optimist Park.
Members of Pat’s family will be recognized.
Admission is free and concessions offered are soft drinks, candy, popcorn, nachos, hot dogs, hamburgers and french fries.

Pat was a member of the Balls Creek Optimist Club (BCOC) from 1977 until his death in 2009.
The club honored him in the 1990’s by making him a Lifetime Member, an honor that is only bestowed upon members that are truly dedicated to the club and live their lives in accordance with the Optimist creed.
Pat Wimberly’s name was synonymous with Little League Baseball and the Balls Creek Optimist Club. During his 32 plus years as a member of the BCOC, Pat volunteered and dedicated his time to assure that some 20,000 youth had the necessary facilities, equipment and leadership to participate in football, baseball, basketball, softball and cheerleading.
Pat served as club president numerous times, served as N.C. Optimist District 7 Lieutenant Governor numerous times, served on the BCOC Board of Directors numerous times, served as the BCOC Athletic Director for 18 consecutive years, served on the Board of Directors for the Bill Hendrix Scholarship Committee, coached football, baseball, and basketball at various times, umpired baseball and softball games, worked on ball fields, worked in concessions at the ball field, at the Balls Creek campground, at the race track, purchased and maintained athletic equipment and attended many meetings with other organizations on behalf of the BCOC.
In 2008, Pat was recognized by the Bandys High baseball team for his commitment and dedication to Little League Baseball.
In 2010, the BCOC honored Pat by naming its primary Little League field “Pat Wimberly Field”.
