Mississippi needed Hayden Deal early on Tuesday night, as in the first inning in relief in a home game against Biloxi (Miss.) that the Braves dropped 6-5.

Deal, a left-hander from Bandys High, made his 97th pro appearance and worked 2 1/3 innings as the second of six pitchers used by Mississippi. He gave up five hits, three runs (all earned), walked one and struck out one.

He is 1-0 this season with an ERA of 0.96, throwing 23 innings and striking out 22 in 10 games.

Deal is 21-15 in the pros with an ERA of 3.04 and 302 strikeouts in 340 innings.

The Braves continue their series with Biloxi on Wednesday night.

In Tuesday’s outing, Deal threw strikes on 36 of his 52 pitches, facing 13 batters before a crowd f 1,770.
