STATE GIRLS SOCCER PLAYOFFS ROUNDUP: Hickory topples Central Davidson in 3A

Ayden Vaughn and Jovana Sanchez each scored once and had an assist on Tuesday night, sparking Hickory High’s 3-0 victory over 25th-seeded Central Davidson in the opening round of the state 3A girls’ soccer playoffs.

Celeste Land added a goal for seventh-seeded and host Hickory (19-3-0), which plays No. 11 Hickory Ridge in the second round at Hickory (the match must be played by Saturday).

Amanda Rojo had an assist for the Red Tornadoes and Morgan Malikowski was in goal for a shutout.

If Hickory wins its next match it will face either No. 1 South Iredell or No. 16 Cuthbertson on May 17 in the third round.

No. 1 South Iredell 8, No. 32 North Lincoln 0: At South Iredell, the Vikings (19-0-0) beat North Piedmont 3A-4A foe North Lincoln (7-11-3) for the third time this season in a 3A opener.

The Vikings advanced to play No. 16 Cuthbertson in the second round at South Iredell.

No. 19 Central Cabarrus 3, No. 13 Crest 2: The Vikings eliminated the Chargers (12-5-3), who had gone 13-2-1 to finish second in the South Mountain Athletic 2A-3A.

Central Cabarrus faces No. 31 North Gaston or No. 4 Cox Mill in the next round.

2A

No. 13 Lincolnton 5, No. 21 Surry Central 2: The Wolves, who finished second in the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A, advanced with a home victory.

Lincolnton (13-4-3) next plays No. 28 Brevard or No. 5 Forbush in the second round at a site to be determined.

No. 6 Parkwood 4, No. 27 East Burke 0: Host Parkwood knocked the Cavs (7-12-4) out of the 2A bracket.

Next up for Parkwood is No. 22 Cramer or No. 11 Polk County by Saturday at Parkwood.

No. 16 R-S Central 6, No. 17 Lexington 2: The Hilltoppers (13-6-1) won their 2A opener at home and will go into the second round facing No. 32 West Stanly or top-seeded Hendersonville at a site to be determined.

4A

No. 16 Mooresville 2, No. 17 Southern Alamance 0: The Blue Devils (15-5-0), who finished third in the North Piedmont 3A-4A advanced with a home victory.

Mooresville goes to No. 2 Hough on Saturday for a second round match.
