HICKORY – Wingate University’s women and the Queens men won South Atlantic Conference (SAC) track and field championships on Saturday at Lenoir-Rhyne.
The Bulldogs scored 237.5 points in the women’s meet, finishing ahead of Queens (162), Coker (12.5) and Lenoir-Rhyne (127.5).
In the men’s meet, Queens scored 215 points with Wingate next at 156, Lenoir-Rhyne taking third (107) and Carson-Newman in fourth.
LRU had two league women’s champs and two in men’s competition.
Domonique Jones won the women’s hammer throw in a school-record of 163-0, and Autumn Drayton won the women’s discus throw at 135-6.
The Bears; Myles Braswell-Sample won the men’s shot put (51-5) and Derek Chavis won the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in nine minutes, 46 seconds.
Drayton won the league’s Freshman of the Year award and Jones was the league’s Field Athlete of the Year.
Elliot Zirwas of Wingate won men’s Freshman of the Year (he was also Field Athlete of the Year) and Queens’ Jimmy Hollingsworth won Track Athlete of the Year.
