MOORESVILLE – A big game meant a big-time performance by Alexander Central High’s baseball team on Thursday night.

Zach Brzycky and Zach Hammer combined on a no-hitter as the Cougars edged Mooresville 1-0 on the road and moved into sole possession of second place in the North Piedmont 3A-4A.

As the night began, Alexander Central, Mooresville and South Iredell shared second place, each a half-game behind Lake Norman. But with the Cougars’ win and North Lincoln winning 4-3 at South Iredell, Alexander Central (12-7, 9-3) is alone in second place.

Lake Norman won 8-0 at North Iredell to stay atop the standings.

Brzycky (5-2) went 6 2/3 innings against Mooresville, walking two and striking out 13, and Hammer pitched the rest of the way, facing one batter and striking him out to pick up his first save of the season.

The Cougars scored their only run in the sixth inning. They finished with three hits – one by Rhyne Johnson, one by Derek Dyson and one by Daniel Dessecker. Johnson had the game’s only RBI.

Alexander Central, which has won five straight games, left four on base and Mooresville left three.

The Cougars are within a win of matching their total from last year, when they went 13-13, and they will play next week in the Catawba Valley Easter Classic at the Legion Fairgrounds Field in Newton.

Alexander Central is the No. 3 seed and plays sixth-seeded St. Stephens in the tournament’s opening game on Monday at 11 a.m.

Mooresville’s schedule indicates it will play host to a Blue Devil Spring Tourney with games on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday.
