WINGATE – Wingate downed Lenoir-Rhyne University 16-8 on Friday in a semifinal of the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) men’s lacrosse tournament, ending the Bears’ season.
The Bulldogs (12-3) meet the winner of Friday’s No. 3 Queens-No. 2 Catawba semifinal on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Wingate in the tournament title match.
LRU finished 6-8, which includes a record adjustment of league wins on March 16 over Tusculum and March 23 against Newberry.
This week, LRU self-reported an SAC violation and secondary NCAA violation after a student-athlete had dropped below the required minimum of 12 credits hours.
“This unfortunate violation was reported as soon as we discovered it,” Kim Pate, director of athletics at LRU, said. “We remain committed to operating with the highest level of integrity while ensuring our commitment to compliance with NCAA rules.”
Eric Dickinson had three goals for LRU against Wingate, taking nine shots, and he added three ground balls.
Anthony Fraga, who had four goals in the Bears’ tournament semifinal win over Newberry (S.C) scored two goals on Friday and Quinn Kugh added one goal and an assist for LRU.
The Bears’ Noah Johnson had a team-high five ground balls and made 11 saves.
Wingate outscored LRU 8-3 in the second half an ended up with a 37-24 advantage in shots and won 24 of 26 face offs.
LRU came in on a six-game win streak, and the Bears allowed more than six goals for the first time since March 30.
Wingate, ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division II, was the eighth nationally ranked opponent for LRU this season.
