HICKORY – Two former Lenoir-Rhyne University football players will return as the broadcast team for Bears football in 2018 on WSIC (1400 AM and 100.7 FM) and the campus radio station (99.3 WRLZ).
JuJu Phillips, a former wide receiver at LRU, and Jack Huss, a former Bears quarterback who was also LRU’s head coach (1974-79) during his career, will be the broadcast team.
Phillips graduated from LRU in 1983 and later served as the Bears’ on-field and color reporter for 12 years before moving to play-by-player five seasons ago.
Huss, a 1969 graduate, joined LRU’s football broadcasts in 2003.
School officials made the announcement by a press release this week, as the Bears approach their first game of the season – and debut of Drew Cronic as head coach – in a game at West Alabama on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
Thursday’s game will not be live on the radio because the stations will have coverage of the Carolina Panthers’ exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburg.
LRU’s game will be live streamed on the WSIC and WLRZ websites.
“(LRU) Athletic Director Kim Pate and her team have shown a commitment to excellence that is the standard by which all collegiate programs should be measured,” Phillips said in the press release. “I’m excited about the opportunity to help call the action on WSIC radio, and I look forward to working with Jack Huss, Lenoir-Rhyne athletics and Bear Nation again this season.”
WSIC is based in Statesville and operates in the Charlotte market, and it’s broadcast range includes Statesville (100.7 FM) and Mooresville (105.9 FM).
“It’s great to see Lenoir-Rhyne athletics expanding its programs, and we are excited to help them reach the greater Lake Norman region,” Mark Sanger, president and CEO of Iredell Broadcasting said in the press release
“We are thrilled to be on the air again this season thanks to WSIC and WLRZ,” Aaron Bessey, associate athletic director at LRU, said in the press release. “Our fans love listening to Jack and JuJu call Bears football and we look forward to keeping that tradition going for many years to come.”
Fans can follow the Bears by visiting @Bears Sports on twitter and Instagram and @LRBearsFootball on both of those platforms.
