HICKORY – Newberry (S.C.) spoiled Senior Day for the Lenoir-Rhyne University women’s soccer team on Saturday, beating the Bears 2-0.
The visiting Wolves (7-10, 3-7 South Atlantic Conference) beat LRU for the first time since 2009, dropping the Bears to 11-5-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the conference.
LRU had a 24-7 edge in shots taken but the only goals in the match came from Newberry’s Daphne Heyaime and Alyssa Ortega, who scored her team-best 11th of the season.
Newberry goalkeeper Jaylen Gant had eight saves, while the Bears’ Alayna Morris made one save.
Even with the loss, LRU will finish fifth in the SAC regular season standings.
The Bears had beaten Newberry in nine straight matches coming in.
Next up for LRU is the SAC tournament, with the quarterfinal round set to begin on Tuesday.
The league will announce the pairings on Sunday.
