HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University has signed three players for its golf teams, including Hibriten High graduate Dawson Walker.

Bears head coach Elliot Gealy announced Monday he will have Walker and Nicholas Marchese of Canada joining LRU’s men’s team and Megan Robb of Scotland will be on the LRU women’s roster.

The fall season begins Sept. 11-12 with the men’s team playing in the Kiawah Island (S.C.) Invitational and the Bears’ women playing in the Ross Resorts Invitational in Southern Pines.

LRU’s women’s golf team won a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) title last season.

Walker was a four-time team MVP at Hibriten, was on three all-region teams and was twice selected all-state. He shot a career-low 67 (5-under) at Cedar Rock Country Club during his prep career and was an honors student (GPA 4.25).

“Dawson has all the skills necessary to make an immediate impact on Lenoir-Rhyne men’s golf,” Gealy said in a press release. “He has an impressive game and a great demeanor on the golf course. I look forward to watch Dawson compete and have success for the Bears during his career.”

Marchsese, from Nobelton, Ontario in Canada, graduated from St. Thomas of Villanova Catholic Secondary School in June. His prep career includes first-team all-region, all-county, all-conference, all-area and all-state accolades each of the past two seasons.

“He will add talent and depth to our experienced roster,” Gealy said. “I am excited to watch Nick’s game grow and become a solid contributor to our team.”

Robb, from Aberdeen, Scotland, attended Aberdeen Grammar School in Northern Scotland. She was captain of her high school squad and competed on the high school net ball team.

“Megan is a very solid player with the ability to overpower the golf course,” Gealy said. “She has a very competitive nature on the golf course and excels in tournament settings. Her game is developing every day and she will be a great addition to our women’s program.”

Gealy said he expects the signed players to contribute immediately.

“I am really excited about the recruiting classes for both teams and the future of Lenoir-Rhyne Golf,” he said. “I am extremely confident they will have success on and off the golf course and will have an immediate impact on the program.

“Our goal is to be competitive on the national stage and win championships and these three young players possess all the talent necessary to help us attain these standards.”
