HIGH SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS: Warriors win conference golf match by 2 strokes

West Caldwell High won by two strokes, and Garrison Millsaps of Alexander Central was medalist on Monday in a Northwestern 3A-4A boys’ golf match at Orchard Hills Golf Club.

The Warriors closed at 316, led by a round of 75 by Lexton Ford, to nip St. Stephens by two strokes after Bryce Hull’s 77 led the Indians.

Millsaps shot a 74 to lead all golfers as Alexander Central finished at 320 and in third place.

Four other golfers broke 80 – Noah Bumgarner of West Caldwell (77), Jared Clontz of Freedom (77), Ben Nichols of Hickory (78) and Caden Powell of St. Stephens (79).

NORTHWESTERN 3A-4A

(Monday at Orchard Hills, fourth match of season)

SOFTBALL

Maiden 24, St. Stephens 9

The Blue Devils built 13-1 lead through three innings on a non-league game at Maiden and scored 11 runs in the fourth inning.

Maiden has 22 hits to the Indians’ 14, and St. Stephens made five errors.

Macey Pennell and losing pitcher Lauren Moser each had three hits for St. Stephens and Baylee Bumgarner, Sophie Hainor, Katy Sherrill and Sadie Watts each drove in a run for the Indians.

Maiden shares the South Fork 2A lead a 7-1 with North Lincoln and faces West Lincoln at Maiden on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a league game.

St. Stephens, 1-7 in the Northwestern 3A-4A and in seventh place, is at home on Tuesday at 6 p.m. to battle last-place Hickoryin a conference game.
