Maiden High scored three runs in their last at-bat to win 8-7 over visiting Newton-Conover on Friday in a South Fork 2A softball game after the Red Devils scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to lead by by two runs.
Maiden’s victory improved it to 5-1 in the conference, and the Blue Devils have a half-game lead over North Lincoln in the standings.
Grace Herman, Emma Lay and Taylor Beard each had two hits and Lashyla Thompson and winning pitcher Addyson Ikard eadh drove in two runs for Maiden.
Leadoff hitter Maddie Carpenter went 3-for-4 for Newton-Conover – 3-2 in the league and now in fifth place – with Destiny Ussery also 3-for-4 and Kaylee Canipe adding two hits.
Kali Flanagan and losing pitcher Destini Vines each hit a home run for the Red Devils.
Vines pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing 11 hits, eight runs (five earned) with four walks and two strikeouts.
Ikard gained a win despite allowing 13 hits and six earned runs.
Maiden is at home on Monday at 6 p.m., facing Lincoln Charter for a conference game, and the Red Devils meet East Lincoln on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Newton for a league battle.
East Lincoln 9, West Lincoln 6
Kylie Thress singled, doubled and hit a home run and drove in three runs as the Mustangs topped the Rebels in a South Fork 2A game at East Lincoln.
Haley Erwin and Katie Hogue also hit home runs for the Mustangs, 4-2 in the league and tied for third place with West Lincoln.
Payton Baker was the winning pitcher for East Lincoln, which scored five first-inning runs and led 9-0 when the Rebels scored six runs in their final at-bat.
East Lincoln outhit West Lincoln 12-9.
Katelynn Crowe had two hits and two RBIs, Faith Cooke had two hits and one RBI, Meredith Summey had two hits and Hogue drove in two runs for East Lincoln.
Jessi Adams had two singles and a grand slam and Bailey Reep hit a home run for the Rebels.
East Lincoln is at Newton-Conover on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. league game while West Lincoln plays Cherryville at home on Monday at 5 p.m. in a non-conference game.
Alexander Central 16, McDowell 3, 5 inn.
The Cougars got half of their 14 hits from the top three players in their batting order en route to a home Northwestern 3A-4A victory that keeps them tied for first place.
Lanie Goforth (3-for-3), Julie Gast (2-for-2, three RBIs) and winning pitcher Chesney Millsaps (2-for-4, four RBIts) combined to go 7-for-9, score eight runs and drive in five batting 1-2-3 in the order.
Alexis Walter added a 3-for-3 game with three RBIs and Alexa Rush had two hits and drove in two runs for the Cougars, who share first place at 5-1 with South Caldwell.
McDowell, in fourth place at 4-2 in league games, had six hits with leadoff hitter Hannah Shelton leading the way with two.
Alexander Central trailed 3-2 going into its second at-bat and scored six runs, extending that lead to 11-3 with three more runs in the third inning.
Millsaps (9-2) threw five innings and gave up three runs (all earned) with two walks and three strikeouts.
Titans starter Kirsten Melvin took the loss, pitching one inning. She gave up four hits, five runs (all earned), walked three and struck out none.
Alexander Central plays a league game at home on Monday at 6 p.m. against St. Stephens while McDowell is at Watauga on the same night for a 6 p.m. conference game.
Watauga 9, St. Stephens 6
The Pioneers wiped out a six-run deficit (the Indians scored all their runs in the first inning) en route to a Northwestern 3A-4A road win.
Watauga scored five runs in the third inning.
Lauren Moser took the loss for the Indians, 1-6 in the league, after going 5 2/3 innings. She gave up six hits and nine runs.
The Pioneers are 5-2 in league play, a half-game back of co-leaders Alexander Central and South Caldwell and a half-game up for third place on McDowell.
Watauga plays a home non-league game Monday at 5 p.m. against Ashe County.
The Indians are in Taylorsville on Monday at 5 p.m. to face Alexander Central in a conference game.
BOYS LACROSSE
Lake Norman Charter 16, Sun Valley 3
Brandon Webster’s eight goals led the Knights to a non-conference road victory, improving their record to 8-1.
Micah Stechmiller added three goals and Zach Tubbs had two goals and an assist for Lake Norman Charter.
The Knights’ next match is Monday at home against Marvin Ridge.
GIRLS SOCCER
East Lincoln 3, Bandys 1 (Thursday)
The Mustangs won a South Fork 2A match at home, getting three goals from Taylor Barrineau and three assists from Sierra Gilley.
Hailey Buchannon and Katie Moolenar combined to make three saves in goal for East Lincoln.
BOYS GOLF
Red Tornadoes by 12 (Thursday)
Colin Healy’s 76 won medalist and he led Hickory to a Northwestern 3A-4A win to open the conference schedule at the Marion Lake Club.
The Red Tornadoes shot a 317, finishing ahead of West Caldwell (329) and Alexander Central (332).
Eli Wyatt had a round of 79 and Ben Nichols shot an 80 for Hickory.
Brye Hull of St. Stephens (78), Matthew Gurnsey of West Caldwell (79) and Cole Carrigan (80) of Alexander Central were the only other golfers at 80 or lower.
The next scheduled conference match is Monday at 2:45 p.m. at Silver Creek Plantation.

Both Panthers golfers are at 238 after Gessner won medalist with a round of 75
in the most recent league match on Monday at Mimosa Country Club.
Patton shot 317 at Mimosa Hills, edging Draughn by 16 strokes.
