Reports this is the first Bunker Hill softball team to reach the third round of the postseason are incorrect – the Bears’ 1984 team, playing in the 2A bracket as the No. 2 seed from the old Southern District 7 2A, defeated Alleghany and Bessemer City and play a third-round game against Franklin, losing 18-10.
The third round state 2A softball playoff games for Bunker Hill High and Fred T. Foard will be played Tuesday at 6 p.m., the schools announced Monday.
No. 13 Bunker Hill (13-6) plays at No. 12 North Lincoln (18-4) while No. 6 Madison (20-0) visits No. 3 Foard (19-3).
The Bunker Hill-North Lincoln winner advances to a fourth-round game that must be played by Friday, at No. 8 North Davidson (25-3) or at No. 1 West Stanly (24-1).
The Madison-Foard winner advances to play No. 10 Mount Pleasant (21-6) or No. 2 Franklin (20-0) in the fourth round, a game that also must be played by Tuesday.
Teams that win on Friday advance into a best-of-3 series for the West 2A championship on May 22-26.
