Forty-five players from the Greater Hickory area – led by Alexander Central’s shortstop and ace pitcher as the state’s top players in Western North Carolina — have been named All-State by the North Carolina Softball Coaches Association (NCSCA).
Alexander Central High shortstop Julie Gast, a senior, was named the West 3A Player of the Year, and teammate Chesney Millsaps, also a senior, was named the West 3A Pitcher of the Year as they led the Cougars (27-5) to a state 3A title.
Gast hit .549 with 13 doubles, three triples and eight home runs and drove in 49 runs this season, while Millsaps went 27-5 with a 3.14 ERA.
Millsaps made 32 appearances, all starts, and finished 31 games. She threw out shutouts, a no-hitter and had 128 strikeouts in 196 innings pitched.
Lincoln Charter had three picks in 1A, there were 23 selections from the South Fork 2A and Northwestern Foothills 2A, seven in 3A from the Northwestern 3A-4A and two in 4A in the Northwestern 3A-4A.
The NCSCA teams are selected by coaches who are members of the association and only players who play for a coach in the NCSCA are eligible for selection.
