HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: No. 13 Foard trips No. 4 Ledford, advances in volleyball

Fred T. Foard High’s volleyball team is paying little attention to its seed – West No. 13 – and has advanced to the third round in the 2A playoffs by knocking off higher-seeded Ledford.

The Tigers, playing on the road, knocked the fourth-seeded Panthers out of the playoffs on Tuesday, winning 25-17, 21-25, 25-22, 27-25.

Foard (19-8) advances to play at No. 5 Hendersonville (19-5), a 3-2 winner at home over No. 12 Forbush on Tuesday, on Thursday at Hendersonville.

The fourth round is Saturday with the Foard-Hendersonville winner playing No. 24 Canton Pisgah or No. 1 West Iredell at a site to be determined.

Mount Pleasant 3, Maiden 2

Seventh-seeded Mount Pleasant, playing at home, eliminated defending West 2A champion Maiden in five sets, 25-9, 26-24, 20-25, 23-25, 15-10).

Kylie Morgan led the 10th-seeded Blue Devils with 21 kills and nine digs.

Evan Sherrill added 15 kills and 11 digs, Abbey Smith had 10 kills and Faith Herman provided 54 assists and 14 digs for Maiden.

Mount Pleasant (26-1) goes to No. 2 North Surry on Thursday.

Canton Pisgah 3, Bandys 0

The Black Bears, seeded 24th, eliminated the 25th-seeded Trojans in three straight, 25-16, 25-17, 25-10, in a 2A match.

Pisgah goes on the road Thursday for the third round, playing at top-seeded West Iredell.

East Lincoln 3, West Stokes 0

The Mustangs, regular season champs in the South Fork 2A, won 25-18, 25-21, 25-11 at home to make the third round on Thursday.

East Lincoln (22-3), seeded No. 3, faces No. 6 R-S Central (27-1) on Thursday at East Lincoln.

West Iredell 3, South Rowan 0

The top-seeded Warriors won at home – 25-16, 25-14, 25-11 – over No. 17 South Rowan to advance to Thursday’s third round in 2A.

West Iredell (24-3) will meet No. 24 Canton Pisgah, which defeated Bandys 3-0 on Tuesday, on Thursday at West Iredell.

North Surry 3, North Lincoln 1

The second-seeded Greyhounds ousted the Knights in a second round 2A match, winning 25-17, 22-25, 21-17, 25-19 to advance.

North Surry (27-1) is at home Thursday for a third round battle with No. 7 Mount Pleasant (26-11), which ousted defending West 2A champion Maiden on Thursday 3-2 at Mount Pleasant.

Watauga 3, Waynesville Tuscola 1

Watauga, seeded No. 5 after winning a Northwestern 3A-4A title, advanced with a home 3A victory.

The Pioneers (22-2) will next play on Thursday against No. 20 Alexander Central or No. 4 Cox Mill, whose match was delayed until Wednesday at 6 p.m. due to storm damages in Alexander County.

Watauga is in a bracket opposite No. 1 North Iredell (24-2) and No. 8 West Henderson (23-5), who play Thursday at North Iredell.

Marvin Ridge 3, Hickory 0

Second-seeded Marvin Ridge ousted 15th-seeded and visiting Hickory in three sets, 25-18, 25-15, 25-17, in a 3A match.

Marvin Ridge next plays on Thursday at home, battling No 10 Carson (23-4) at Marvin Ridge.

Mallard Creek 3, McDowell 0

No. 10 Mallard Creek toppled No. 7 McDowell 3-0 in Marion to reach the third round in 4A.

Next up for Mallard Creek is No. 15 Lake Norman (16-9) on Thursday at Mallard Creek.

Alex Central match postponed

No. 20 Alexander Central (17-7) will play its second round 3A match at No. 4 Cox Mill (22-3) on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The match was originally scheduled for Tuesday but delayed after severe weather hit Alexander County on Monday and closed school on Tuesday.

The winner of Wednesday’s match plays again on Thursday, against No. 5 Watauga at a site to be determined.

BOYS SOCCER

St. Stephens 2, South Caldwell 1

The Indians won a Northwestern 3A-4A match on the road, and they’re tied with Watauga for second place (9-3-1) behind Hickory.

Dylan Zavala and Luis Ugalde scored for St. Stephens and Michael Mahoney had two assists.

The regular season ends Wednesday at 6 p.m., with St. Stephens on the road to face archrival Hickory.

East Lincoln 2, West Lincoln 0

At West Lincoln, Sebastian Cunningham and Johnny Pike scored for the Mustangs in a South Fork 2A match.

Will Rhoney had an assist, and Pike’s goal was his first on the varsity team.

East Lincoln goalkeepers Ryan Costner and Matt Kosmala combined for a shutout.

The Mustangs (14-7, 9-4-0) close the regular season at home Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., facing conference champion Newton-Conover.

Patton 8, East Burke 1

Playing on the road, the Panthers scored four goals in each half en route to a Northwestern Foothills 2A victory.

Patton, 11-0-0 in the league, has already clinched the conference title.

The Panthers end the regular season on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. at home, battling West Iredell.

West Iredell (7-4-0) is in third place, behind Hibriten (7-3-1) and ahead of Fred T. Foard (7-4-1), which has completed its 12-match conference schedule.

Postponements

Two South Fork 2A matches originally scheduled on Monday will now be played on Thursday.

North Lincoln visits Lincolnton for a makeup match and Lake Norman Charter will play at Bandys at 6 p.m.

Lake Norman Charter and Bandys had planned to play Tuesday but moved the match due to wet field conditions.

Lake Norman Charter, 8-3-1 in the league, is in second place while Bandys (5-7-0) is just behind Lincolnton (5-6-1) and in sixth place in the conference standings.

There’s a full South Fork 2A schedule for Wednesday, which was originally set to be the end of the regular season. Matches include Newton-Conover at East Lincoln, West Lincoln at Lake Norman Charter, Bandys at North Lincoln and Lincolnton at Maiden.
