CLAREMONT – The top returning receiver in the Northwestern 3A-4A helped St. Stephens High pick up its first football win of the season on Friday night.
Teavius Henry, who caught 63 passes for 847 yards a season ago, had a receiving TD to open the scoring for the Indians in their 35-7 victory at Bunker Hill.
St. Stephens (1-1) beat the Bears (0-2) for the fourth straight season and ran its win streak at Bunker Hill to three.
The win — which evened the Indians-Bears series at 19 wins each since 1980 — was win No. 15 for Wayne Hicks, in his fifth season guiding St. Stephens.
The Indians led 21-0 at the half and got two fumble return TDs — of 5 and 95 yards –by Ian Walker in the victory.
St. Stephens forced the Bears into seven turnovers (five fumbles, two interceptions).
Bunker Hill, outscored 86-7 in its two games so far, scored in the third quarter.
Justin Bullock threw for more than 200 yards for St. Stephens, which had a three-TD lead at home in its season opener last week before falling 42-40 in double overtime to Bandys.
The Indians are headed into their bye week and will have two weeks to get ready for a trip to Maiden. They play Fred T. Foard at home on Sept. 15 and their first Northwestern 3A-4A game of the season is Sept. 22 at Freedom.
The Bears face Maiden this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in Claremont then go to Bandys and to West Wilkes. Bunker Hill’s first Northwestern Foothills 2A game is Sept. 22 at home against conference favorite Hibriten.
