HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Godfrey, Weiss run for 410 yards as Cougars overpower Warriors

LENOIR – Bryson Godfrey and Devon Weiss combined for 410 rushing yards and six touchdowns on Friday night as Alexander Central High opened conference play by beating West Caldwell 59-35.

The high-scoring Cougars (5-0, 1-0) ran for 489 yards and had 564 yards of offense in Butch Carter’s 200th game as a prep head coach.

Alexander Central checked the Warriors (3-2, 0-1) on 285 yards, holding them to 100 rushing yards on 26 carries to survive three lost fumbles and 88 yards in penalties in Northwestern 3A-4A game.

The Cougars had the ball for nearly 28 of the game’s 48 minutes.

Godfrey, who gained 229 yards on 17 carries, scored on runs of 15, 32 and 57 yards while Weiss, who ran 17 times for 181 yards, scored on runs of 2, 37 and 10 yards.

Jeremy Boyce’s 64 rushing yards on 14 carries led West Caldwell, and quarterback Kaleb Dula completed 12 of 17 passes for 185 yards and four TDs.

Dula found Shawn Hendrix twice and Joseph Godinez and Elijah Brooks on TDs passes. His fourth score, to Hendrix for 22 yards with 10 minutes, three seconds left in the third quarter pulled the Warriors within 46-35.

From there, the Cougars scored the game’s final two TDs, on a 10-yard run by Weiss with 6:50 to play and on a 9-yard run by Tevin Clark with 31 seconds to go in the game.

Jordan Brown had 10 tackles, including a sack, to lead Alexander Central defensively. Isaac Chapman added seven tackles, three for lost yardage, and Clark had six tackles.

Taye Dula had 10 tackles for West Caldwell, Will Gause added seven and Dakota Ramsey provided six.

Alexander Central led 24-14 after one quarter and 46-28 by halftime.

The Cougars are at home next Friday for a key league game at 7:30 p.m. against unbeaten Watauga.

West Caldwell, playing up a classification (3A) after statewide realignment, plays county rival South Caldwell next Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Hudson.
