NEWTON – Fred T. Foard High reached six varsity football wins for the 14th time in school history by tripping visiting Draughn 28-13 on Friday night in the Northwestern Foothills 2A.
The Tigers (6-3, 2-2) are in fourth place in the league after a victory that featured running back Tate Beaver and quarterback Jack Colosimo combining for more than 200 yards rushing.
Colosimo ran for two touchdowns and Beaver rushed for one as the Tigers collected career win No. 40 for Derrick Minor, who is in his second season at Foard with a 9-11 record.
Beaver had Foard’s opening score before Draughn (2-8, 1-4) took the lead on a TD pass from Christian Campbell to Hunter Jensen and a PAT by Carlos Garcia.
Beaver’s TD run and his two-point conversion run gave Foard a 14-7 halftime lead.
The Wildcats pulled within one point when Campbell and Jensen connected again in the third quarter.
Corey Siemer’s scoring run and another by Colosimo widened the Tigers’ lead.
Foard is playing varsity football for the 59th year and won at least six games twice in the 1960s, four times in the 1980s, three times in the 1990s and now five times since 2000 (2000, 2006, 2008, 2014 are the other years).
The Tigers have two conference games left, at East Burke next Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and on Nov. 3 at home against West Iredell.
Draughn will finish with a losing record for the eighth time in its nine seasons of varsity football. The Wildcats have an open date this week and then finish the season at home against archrival East Burke on Nov. 3.
