HICKORY – Newton-Conover High’s girls have a familiar roadblock ahead as they make their 10th appearance in a West Regional title game at noon on Saturday.

The third-seeded Red Devils (28-2) battle top-seeded Salisbury (28-1) in the 2A final at Catawba Valley Community College.

The winner advances to the state 2A championship game next Saturday against No. 3 Kinston (27-3) or No. 1 Farmville Central (24-3), who meet Saturday at East Carolina for the East title.

Newton-Conover, 2-7 in its previous West Regional title game match-ups, faces Salisbury for a third time. The last two meetings – in 2010-11 and 2009-2010 – were won by the Hornets, 49-35 and 43-32, respectively, in title games.

Salisbury and Newton-Conover also played in a first-round West Regional game in 2002-03 with Salisbury winning 40-34.

The Red Devils won a West 2A title in 1989-90 then fell to Clinton in the state championship game. Their other West title was in 1991-92 when they went on to win a state 2A championship.

Saturday’s game at CVCC is the fourth West Regional game for Newton-Conover head coach Sylvia White, who is in her third tenure guiding the Red Devils.

She was the head coach in 1989-90, guided the 1991-92 team and was head coach in 2002-03 when Salisbury won a first-round West 2A Regional game.
