HICKORY – The Bunker Hill High girls and Fred T. Foard boys are the top seeds for the Dick’s Sporting Goods Classic scheduled Dec. 27-29 at Catawba Valley Community College’s Tarlton Complex.
This will be the 32nd year for a holiday girls’ and boys’ basketball tournament in Catawba County.
The pairings were announced on Thursday morning via the Hickory Metro Sports Commission (HMSC).
A tournament official said in an e-mail to media and coaches that the tournament fields had teams with as few as one or as many as seven games played through Tuesday night so team records were not used to develop the pairings.
In that e-mail, the official said a committee seeded the tournaments based on points per game scored, through Tuesday, as posted on MaxPreps.
That format left, in girls, Newton-Conover (1-3) as a No. 2 seed, Hickory (1-1) as a No. 3 and St. Stephens (2-1) as a No. 5.
In boys, it resulted in Foard (1-3) as a top seed ahead of Maiden (3-0) and Hickory (2-0) and it has Bunker Hill (3-4) as a No. 5 seed, one spot ahead of Newton-Conover (3-1).
Current records for the girls’ teams (through Wednesday night games): 1. Bunker Hill 5-2; 2. Newton-Conover 1-3; 3. Hickory 1-1; 4. Maiden 0-2; 5. St. Stephens 2-1; 6. Fred T. Foard 2-2; 7. South Caldwell 0-2; 8. Alexander Central 0-2.
Current records for boys’ teams (through Wednesday night games): 1. Fred T. Foard 1-3; 2. Maiden 3-0; 3. Hickory 2-0; 4. St. Stephens 1-2; 5. Bunker Hill 3-4; 6. Newton-Conover 3-1; 7. Alexander Central 1-1; 8. South Caldwell 0-2.
