Professional fisherman K.J. Queen, a Bandys High graduate in his rookie season on the BASSMASTER Elite Series, had a very good weekend.
Queen had catches of 35 pounds, 15 ounces on the Sabine River in Texas to finish 10th and pocket $16,000.
He has now played in 12 tournaments with two Top 10 finishes and finished with earnings in 10 of those events.
Queen’s sister, Chesley, went to Bethel University to play volleyball and fish and he joined her there to fish on scholarship three years later.
K.J. Queen’s mom is one of the most notable girls’ basketball players from the Greater Hickory area — Beth (Laney) Queen played on varsity basketball teams that went 111-7 and she also coached the varsity girls (two tenures) to a 231-108 record.
Beth Queen went to Appalachian State on a basketball scholarship and won one Southern Conference Player of the Year award and is in the ASU Hall of Fame as well as the Catawba County Sports Hall of Fame.
