HICKORY – Ti’Quan Forbes’ timely hitting carried the Hickory Crawdads to a home victory on Tuesday night.
Forbes singled in the fourth and eighth inning, driving in runs, as the Crawdads clipped visiting Greenville (S.C.) 2-1 in South Atlantic League (SAL) baseball at L.P. Frans Stadium.
The game drew 1,225 and opened a three-game series against the Drive. Game 2 is Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
Forbes collected his 25th and 26th RBIs in the win with his two hits and Yanio Perez added two hits for Hickory (23-35), which had seven hits.
Four Crawdads pitchers combined to limit the Drive (34-213), the SAL’s Southern Division leader, to four hits.
Reid Anderson, the fourth Hickory pitcher, went two innings to gain a win. He gave up one hit and struck out two.
Protecting a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning, he got a strikeout and game-ending groundball out after Greenville got a runner to second base.
Ryan Scott went 2-for-4 to lead Greenville. He drove in the Drive’s only run in the fourth inning after Santiago Espinal singled and stole second base.
Forbushes singled in Perez, who had singled and stole second, in the bottom of the fourth inning for a tie at 1.
In the eighth inning, Miguel Aparicio singled with two outs for Hickory. Perez then singled before Forbes’ single drove in the go-ahead rn.
Matthew Gorst took the loss for Greenville after going two innings, giving up three hits, a run (earned) with no walks and one strikeout. He threw strikes on 19 of his 26 pitches.
The Driver starter was Bryan Mata, who went six innings. He allowed four hits, one run (earned), walked one and struck out six.
