COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Red Hawks sweep Spartanburg Methodist to open season

HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) opened its volleyball season at home on Tuesday night, downing Spartanburg Methodist 3-0.

The Red Hawks won 25-15, 25-16, 25-20 and will next play this weekend in Perryburg, Ohio. They are ranked No. 13 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Sage Harrington, a freshman from Alexander Central High, paced CVCC’s victory with 10 kills and two blocks and Emma Clark, a freshman from Watauga High, added six kills, four blocks and two aces.

After powering its way to a 10-point win in the opening set, CVCC capitalized on its serve to pull away in the second set.

The Red Hawks tallied seven of their 11 aces in the second set, getting two each by Rachel Delcamp and Emily Williams. Delcamp led CVCC with a team-high four aces.

Trailing 12-9 early in third set, the Red Hawks again utilized their serves effectively, rallying behind Clark, who had back-to-back aces, to pull back ahead for good.

CVCC’s matches this weekend are part of the Owens Community College Invitational. The Red Hawks play Division II power No. 2 Parkland College at 11:45 a.m. Friday, followed by a 1:30 p.m. match against St. Clair County Community College (Mich.).

On Saturday, CVCC faces Vincennes University (Ind.) at 10 a.m. and Glen Oaks Community College (Mich.) at 1:30 p.m.
