WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Cape Fear snaps Red Hawks’ 15-game win streak

WILMINGTON – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) fell behind by as many as 16 points in the opening quarter Saturday and never recovered as host Cape Fear Community College won 83-61 to snap the Red Hawks’ 15-game win streak.

Cape Fear, ranked No. 20 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), withstood a 20-point game by Sherry Johnson of the Red Hawks (22-4, 16-2 Region X, ranked No. 15).

Aniya Taylor added 15 points for CVCC and Milequa Eason had 10.

CVCC plays again Sunday on the road, facing Brunswick Community College at 2 p.m.

CVCC fell behind 24-8 after the first quarter, but outscored Cape Fear 22-17 during the second quarter to cut its deficit to just 41-30 at halftime.

On Saturday, the Red Hawks fell behind 24-8 in the first quarter and they were within 41-30 by halftime.

The Sea Devils (21-4, 16-3) came out of the third quarter leading by 13 points.

Ayonna Cotten scored 22 points to lead Cape Fear. A’Terria Quick (20 points), Ny Langley (17 points) and Autum Morings (12 points) also reached double figures.

CVCC 82, Louisburg 61 (Thursday)

The Red Hawks ran their win streak to 15 with a home victory on Sophomore Night when Johnson had 30 points and 10 rebounds for her 17th career double-double.

She scored 30 points or more for the third time this season.

Zharia Brown, a sophomore, also had a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) for CVCC while Taylor scored 11 points.

Johnson battled through having two quick fouls and CVCC also lost freshman forward Ivy Eller, a Newton-Conover High product, to a severe ankle injury.

CVCC led 37-32 at the half.

The Red Hawks led by eight points heading into the final quarter and outscored Louisburg (18-8, 10-8) by 30-17.

Johnson scored 24 of her points in the second half.

Markela Avent paced Louisburg (18-8, 10-8) with 18 points and Caleah Smith and Harmony Davidson each added 12.
