NEWTON – Hickory Post 48 has gained the Area IV West No. 4 seed, after tying Asheville for the spot, and will play the East No. 5 seed Gaston Braves in the opening round of the American Legion baseball playoffs on Saturday.

Game 1: Saturday at Legion Fairgrounds, Newton. 7 p.m.
Game 2: Sunday at Belmont (South Point HS), 7 p.m.
Game 3: Monday at Legion Fairgrounds, Newton, 7 p.m.
Game 4, if needed: Tuesday at Belmont (South Point HS), 7 p.m.
Game 5, if needed: Wednesday at Legion Fairgrounds, Newton, 7 p.m.
Hickory, 11-17 overall, finished 7-9 in West Division games – as did Asheville – and the teams split their regular season games and had the same records against the rest of Area’s IV teams, forcing a draw for the No. 4 West seed.
Post 48 got No. 4 and will start a best-of-5 first-round series against the Gaston Braves (10-9) on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Legion Fairgrounds in Newton.
Game 2 is Sunday at Belmont Abbey College, and Game 3 will be Monday night at the Fairgrounds.
Post 48 played Gaston once this season, falling 7-2 on June 7 at South Point High.
Hickory, coached by Cameron Beard, has lost two straight games and eight of its last nine.
