MAIDEN – Union County scored seven runs over the final two innings on Friday night to win 12-2 and spoil Maiden Post 240’s home opener in American Legion baseball.
Collecting 11 hits and holding Maiden to five, Union County left Maiden (2-1) with a victory that included three errors by Post 240.
Union County led 5-1 until the sixth inning, when it scored twice, and added seven runs in the seventh inning.
Dylan Abernathy, Taylor Tibbs, Josh Frye, J.R. McRee and Andy Friar each had a hit for Maiden, which opened the season with 3-0 with wins over Huntersville (two) and Kings Mountain, all on the road.
Bryson Ledford took Friday night’s loss, pitching three innings. He gave up four hits, five runs (two earned), walked five and struck out two.
Maiden’s next game is Saturday at 7 p.m. against the Gaston Braves at Belmont Abbey College. On Sunday, Post 240 travels to East Henderson High to play a doubleheader against Henderson County that begins at 2 p.m.
Post 240 has three games next week – Monday at East Lincoln High at 7 p.m. against Lincoln County, Thursday at Cherryville at 7 p.m. and next Saturday at home against Mint Hill at 7 p.m.
