GIRLS SOCCER ROUNDUP: Newton-Conover hands Lincolnton first SD-7 2A loss

Traditional girls’ soccer power Newton-Conover High is right back in the thick of a chase for another Southern District 7 Athletic 2A title.

The Red Devils won 3-1 at Lincolnton on Thursday night, handing the Wolves (7-1-2) their first conference loss.

Newton-Conover improved to 7-1-1, the same league record East Lincoln had through matches of Wednesday.

Bunker Hill 1, Bandys 1: The Bears and Trojans tied in an SD-7 2A match on Thursday at Bandys, leaving both teams with league records of 2-7-1.

NORTHWESTERN 3A-4A

South Caldwell 1, Hibriten 0: At Hibriten, the Spartans won to improve to 6-4-0 in the league.

Hibriten is 5-3-2 in a league race that is led by Hickory with second-place Foard two games behind with four to go.

SOUTH MOUNTAIN ATHLETIC 2A-3A

Kings Mountain 6, Crest 1: The Mountaineers are inching toward a league title, improving to 13-0-0.

Crest, 9-2-1 in the conference, is tied with East Rutherford for second place.

The league plays a 16-match schedule.

East Burke 5, Draughn 0: At East Burke, the Cavs shutout the Wildcats and sit in fifth place at 5-5-2.

Draughn, in last place, is winless at 0-13-0 in the conference.

R-S Central 4, Chase 2: The Hilltoppers improved to 6-5-0 in the conference by winning on the road.

Chase fell to 2-8-2 in the league and is in eighth place.

East Rutherford 4, Shelby 3: East Rutherford won at home, improving to 9-2-1 in the league and pulling into a tie for second place with Crest.

Shelby is 3-6-3 in league matches.

NORTH PIEDMONT 3A-4A

Mooresville 7, Alexander Central 0: The Blue Devils are in third place (7-3-0) after beating the Cougars (2-8-0) at home.

West Iredell 2, Statesville 1: At Statesville, the Warriors (3-6-1) won and left the Greyhounds winless in conference matches (0-10-0).

Lake Norman 1, North Iredell 0: Winning on the road, the Wildcats (8-2-0) stayed in second place behind South Iredell.

North Iredell is 6-4-0 in league matches.
