HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University announced Tuesday it has signed two players for women’s basketball – both from Georgia high schools – to bring its recruiting class to five.
Bears head coach Cam Sealey signed Ashley Woodroffe, a 5-foot-8 guard from Flowerly Branch High, and Nakia Hooks, a 5-10 forward from Apalachee High in Auburn, Ga.
LRU announced in November it has landed Mallory Sherrill, a 5-11 forward from Statesville Christian, 5-7 guard Blair Barefoot of Wilmington Hoggard and Michaela Dixon, a 5-9 guard-forward from Butler High in Charlotte.
Sealey said the two new signees are a good fit.
“They both bring qualities that we were specifically looking for to help round out this 2019 recruiting class,” Sealey said in a press release. “Their work ethic, leadership, and demeanor on the court will help bring a level of intensity to our practice and culture.”
Flowery Branch won more than 100 games with Woodroffe in uniform and her team was a conference champion four times and made three Final Four appearances in the state tournament.
Woodroffe’s 2017-18 team was state runner-up in Class 5A.
“She just knows how to win, and is a true competitor,” Sealey said in the press release. “Ashley’s ability to get to the basket and her intensity on defense caught my eye immediately.
“The first workout I attended, she had me sold just by the pace she completed each rep and her drive to be perfect.”
Hooks’ No. 4 jersey has been retired at Apalachee after she became the school’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. She was an All-Region player four times and also all-state in track and field and a region volleyball player of the year during her career.
“Nakia is a tough and smart athlete,” Sealey said in the press release. “She is strong, does the little things, and is relentless on the glass at both ends of the court. Her strength, quickness and athleticism are very impressive.”
