COLLEGE INDOOR TRACK/FIELD: Lotharp Most Outstanding as both LRU teams second in league

WINSTON-SALEM – Lenoir-Rhyne University had a big weekend in indoor track and field with both team’s finishing second, and sprinter P.J. Lotharp being named the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Outstanding Track Athlete of the Year.

Queens won both team championships with the women scoring 188 points to edge LRU (134) and the men scoring 184 points with LRU net at 131 points.

Lotharp won the men’s 60-meterin 6.83 seconds and he set a record (21.74) in also winning the 200 meters.

LRU’s 1,600-meter relay team of Lucas Besong, Lotharp, Chandelor Stamp and Devine Drummond won a title in 3:22.83, setting a school record and a league championship meet record.

Anthony Brown of the Bears took second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.33).

Earning third-place finishes for LRU were Jaquay Mitchell in the triple jump (47-5 ¼) and Cole Henderson in the shot put at 48-2 ¾.

In the women’s meet, Saidah Hardwick of the Bears won a 400-meter title, running a league record 57.88 seconds, and added a third in the 200-meter.

Paiton Fair of LRU won the 800-meter in a conference-best time of 2:16.99 while the 1,600-relay team of Fair, Tyrea Poole, Taylor Meadows and Hardwick won in 3:55.23 to set a new SAC mark.

Gaining second-place finishes for the Bears were Savanna Watkins in the women’s pentathlon and Destiny Gayton in the high jump (5-1 ¾).

Poole was third in the 400-meter (58.79), Kylie Dahlberg was third in the 800-meter (2:33.58) and Watkins added a third in the 60-meter hurdles (9.21).

Overall, LRU athletes broke 10 SAC championship meet records and collected 11 titles.

The NCAA Indoor Championships are scheduled March 8-9 in Pittsburg, Kan.
