GREENSBORO – Five of the top 10 teams in the state 2A wrestling championships came from the three Greater Hickory area leagues, which also produced seven state championship wrestlers as the three-day tournament concluded Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum.
West Lincoln finished second in the 2A tournament behind Central Academy with Fred T. Foard in fourth, Newton-Conover in seventh, West Iredell in eighth and Bunker Hill in 10th.
St. Stephens finished fourth in the 3A tournament, won by Piedmont, and Mooresville won the state 4A title.
Five of the area’s state champions came in 2A bracket and two were in 3A, highlighted by Fred T. Foard’s Landon Foor repeating as a champ by winning at 182 pounds and finishing the season at 42-0. He won a title at 170 pounds as a freshman.
Also winning back-to-back state titles were West Lincoln’s Nathan Hull in 2A at 152 pounds, where he finished 36-3, and Freedom’s Spencer Leonhardt at 145 pounds in the 3A bracket (43-1).
Hull, a senior, was named the 2A tournament’s most outstanding wrestler. A year ago, he won a title at 145 pounds.
Colby Teague of Bandys finished 53-1 in winning a state title in 2A at 145 pounds while Newton-Conover’s Josuah Nichols won at 170 pounds, finishing 55-3, and Landon Shuford of West Iredell won a crown at 132 pounds to finish 38-2.
St. Stephens’ 195-pounder, Salvador Gilvaja, closed his year at 60-3 by winning a title in 3A.
