CHAPEL HILL – Newton-Conover, Hibriten, Hickory, Patton and Watauga will open the state boys’ high school soccer playoffs with home matches.
In pairings and seedings released Monday by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) the Red Devils (21-0-2) were the West No. 1 seed in 2A, earning a home match Wednesday against No. 32 North Davidson (8-13-2).
As the No 15 West 2A seed, Hibriten (11-7-3) drew a first-round match in Lenoir against No. 18 Lincolnton (12-8-1).
Northwestern 3A-4A regular season champion Hickory (15-6-1) is the West 6 seed in 3A and opens at home Wednesday at 6 p.m. against No. 27 Concord Robinson (11-11-0).
Patton, the Northwestern Foothills 2A regular season champion, is the West 2A No. 2 seed and will play West No. 31 Chase (9-9-0) in Morganton in the opening round.
West No. 12 Watauga (15-6-2) opens the postseason at home by playing West No. 21 A.L. Brown (13-7-3).
Also advancing from Great Hickory area conferences – and with opening round 2A matches on the road – were No. 10 Lake Norman Charter (12-5-2), No. 17 East Lincoln (14-8-0),No. 19 Fred T. Foard (12-7-4), No. 23 Maiden (8-10-1), No. 24 Bandys (10-11-0) and No. 26 West Iredell (9-11-2).
The first round pits South Fork 2A rivals Lake Norman Charter and Maiden against each other for a third time this season. They split in the regular season, Maiden winning 4-3 in two overtimes at Maiden and the Knights winning 5-1 at Lake Norman.
St. Stephens (12-8-1, West No. 24) made the 3A bracket while South Caldwell (10-5-3, West No. 7) has a first-round bye in 4A.
