Winner faces No. 2 Clinton for state title Saturday in Raleigh

NEWTON – Newton-Conover High’s match that could return it to the state 2A boys’ soccer championship has been delayed by rainy weather again.
Originally scheduled for Monday against Salisbury at Salisbury, it was rained out and reset for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
On Tuesday, the match was moved to West Rowan High in Mount Ulla with a 7 p.m. start.
On Wednesday morning, Newton-Conover athletic officials announced the match will now be played on Thursday at 7 p.m. at West Rowan.
Newton-Conover (22-3-1), the South Fork 2A champion this season, is seeded No. 4 and Salisbury (24-2-1) is seeded No. 3.
Wednesday night’s winner advances to the state 2A championship match in Raleigh on Saturday against No. 2 Clinton (25-1), which knocked off defending East 2A champion First Flight, 6-5 by penalty kicks, to advance.
Newton-Conover is the defending state 2A champion, beating First Flight 1-0 in Raleigh for the title.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) will announce the state championship match times once it knows which teams are advancing to Raleigh.
The 3A title match will pit these winners against each other: No. 9 Marvin Ridge (20-3) versus No. 3 Mount Tabor (21-4-1) and No. 18 East Chapel Hill (18-4-2) versus No. 12 Chapel Hill (20-3-1). Those matches were rained out and reset for Wednesday.
In 4A, No. 8 Myers Park won 2-1 at No. 6 South Mecklenburg on Tuesday night to win the West title while No. 1 Green Hope edged No. 2 Cardinal Gibbons 3-2 at Green Hope to get to the state championship match.
Myers Park (20-2) and Green Hope (22-2-1) will play for the 4A title on Saturday at a time to be determined.
