Alexander Central High scored twice in a span of 42 seconds on Thursday night en route to a 44-14 junior varsity football victory over visiting Wilkes Central.
Already up 14-6, the Cougars boosted their lead when Bryson Abernathy caught a 62-yard TD pass from Lance Justice and got a 21-yard scoring pass from Easton Rhoney to Will Elder just 22 seconds later.
Alexander Central led 20-6 at the half and quickly up 28-6 in the second half when Rhoney scored on a 5-yard run and threw a two-point conversion pass to Sean Boles).
The Cougars had 324 yards of total offense, led by Colton Yount’s 69 rushing yards. Dayente Calhoun added 67 rushing yards, Daniel Morgan had 35 and Rhoney had 20 and two TDs.
Rhoney completed 3-of-4 passes for another 55 yards and a TD and Justice threw for 62 yards and a TD.
Wilkes Central had 90 rushing yards, 65 byJosh Pack, who threw a 23-yard TD pass to Rhett Triplett to pull the Eagles within 28-14 with four minutes, six seconds to play in the third quarter.
Yount ran 4 yards for a TD and Calhoun scored on a 7-yard run in the final 9:19.
JaiKwaun Tilley led the Cougars defensively with 10 tackles, and Rayvon Harris had six to lead the Eagles.
Bandys 38, Fred T. Foard 12: The Trojans won their opener on the road. No other details were available.
VOLLEYBALL
Maiden 3, St. Stephens 1: The Blue Devils won 25-22, 24-26, 25-13, 25-14 on the road.
Lexie Hall led the Indians with nine digs, Rachel Merrill had nine kills and Sydney Otterberg added seven and Sam Wilson contributed 31 assists for St. Stephens.
The Indians have a home match Saturday at 3 p.m. against Fred T. Foard while Maiden will be at home at 6 p.m., facing Bandys, to open the South Fork 2A schedule.
Fred T. Foard 3, Newton-Conover 0: The Tigers won at home behind 35 kills from Meagan Dorsey and 24 aces by Gwyn Brooks.
Foard plays Saturday at 3 p.m. in a non-conference match at St. Stephens.
Newton-Conover meets Lincolnton in Newton at 6 p.m. on Tuesday to open its South Fork 2A schedule.
Hibriten 3, Freedom 2: The visiting Panthers won despite Savanah Jordan’s nine kills and 26 assists by the Patriots’ Lauren Bedard.
Hibriten plays Monday at 6 p.m. at home against Bunker Hill, and Freedom opens Northwestern 3A-4A play on Tuesday at 6 p.m. with a home match against St. Stephens.
BOYS SOCCER
Hickory Christian 3, Hibriten 1: Nijat Tahirli had a goal and Wyatt Plaster made three saves for the Panthers in a home loss.
The Panthers play at South Caldwell on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
West Lincoln 9, Cherryville 0: The Rebels won a home match, shutting out the Ironmen.
West Lincoln plays Burns on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at West Lincoln.
Weekend matches: Hickory and Newton-Conover are headed to play this weekend in the Kickoff Classic in Cary.
The Red Tornadoes face Jacksonville at 4 p.m. on Friday and Newton-Conover will face Clinton.
On Saturday, Hickory meets Wake Forest at 9 a.m. while Newton-Conover plays Carrboro at 11 a.m.
