TAYLORSVILLE – The threat of rainy weather on Friday night has moved the Hickory at Alexander Central high school football game up by one night.

On Tuesday, Alexander Central officials announced the Northwestern 3A-4A game — which closes the regular season for all of the conference’s teams — will now be played Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Alexander Central.

The game was originally scheduled for Oct. 26 but postponed and reset for Friday.

The Cougars (8-2, 4-2) are in third place, one game in front of Hickory (5-5, 3-3) and need a victory to hold third place.

If Hickory wins, it will tie Alexander Central for third place behind Watauga and Freedom. If Hickory loses, it will share fourth place with St. Stephens (the Indians hold the tiebreaker, a win over HHS).

The state football playoffs were scheduled to begin on Friday but the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) revised the schedule because of earlier hurricane-related weather.

The state pairings are due out this weekend and first-round games will be played on Nov. 16.

Lincolnton at Maiden on Wednesday

The final South Fork 2A regular season game of the season, Lincolnton (2-8, 1-5) at Maiden (7-3, -3) was not played on Monday because of wet field conditions.

The game is reset for Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Maiden.

The Blue Devils are in fourth place and need a win to hold that spot. They are one game ahead of East Lincoln (5-6, 3-4), a 38-16 home winner on Monday night over Newton-Conover.

The Wolves are in seventh place.
