HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Freedom shuts out St. Stephens in league opener

MORGANTON – Tristan Somerville scored three touchdowns on Friday night as Freedom High walloped visiting St. Stephens 36-0, staying unbeaten all-time against the Indians in varsity football.

Somerville, a senior wide receiver, ran for a score and caught two scoring passes from Jayden Birchfield, who threw for nearly 240 yards as the Patriots improved to 4-1 overall.

St. Stephens (1-4, 0-1) had four turnovers in the loss and is winless in five meetings with Freedom and 0-3 in Morganton, being outscored 212-34 in those road losses.

The Patriots’ defense limited the Indians to 131 yards.

Birchfield also hit Jaxon McMahon on 12 passes, including one for a TD, and C.J. Hayden had a rushing TD for Freedom.

The Patriots travel next Friday to play a league game at Hickory with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

St. Stephens is at home next Friday, also at 7:30 p.m., to battle McDowell in a conference game.
