CHARLESTON, W. Va. – Albert Baur and Trae Arbet hit home runs for West Virginia on Saturday night in an 11-2 victory over visiting Hickory that reached as deep into the Crawdads’ pitching as catcher Carlos Garay throwing the ninth inning.
Garay pitched the ninth inning — giving up two hits, three runs (all earned) with a walk and no strikeouts — as Hickory (33-47, 6-4 second half) fell before a crowd of 2,039.
Game 3 of a four-game series is Sunday at 2:05 p.m. in Charleston, W. Va.
The start of the South Atlantic League (SAL) game on Saturday night was rain-delayed by nearly an hour, 40 minutes.
West Virginia (3-41, 5-5) had a five-run second inning and led 7-0 before the Crawdads scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The loss left Hickory tied with Delmarva (Md.) for second place in the Northern Division, two games back of Hagerstown (Md.), and the Power is in fourth place, three games back of the Suns.
Garrett Brown, Brent Gibbs, Bauer and Arbert each had two hits for West Virginia, which had 12. Baur drove in two runs and Brown one, and Baur hit his third home run of the season in the eighth inning. Arbert drove in three runs and his two-run home run (No. 8 this year) came in the eighth inning.
Alex Kowalczyk, Ti-Quan Forbes and Yeyson Yrizzari had two hits each for the Crawdads, who had seven, and Yrizzari drove in two runs and hit his fifth home run of the season in the ninth inning.
Oddy Nunez (3-5) started for West Virginia and pitched with a lead. He threw 5 2/3 innings, giving up six hits, one run (earned) and walked three and struck out two.
For Hickory, starter Michael Matuella (0-5) went 1 2/3 innings. He allowed five hits, five runs (one earned) with no walks and two strikeouts.
