WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Lester-led Red Hawks win fifth straight game

HICKORY – A season-best performance by guard Shaniya Lester sparked the Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) women to their fifth straight basketball victory on Friday night.

The Red Hawks beat visiting Clinton College 96-49 at the Tarlton Complex to improve to 6-1 overall. They are 2-0 in Region X.

Lester matched her season-high in points, scoring 27. She also scored 27 in the Red Hawks’ 112-30 season-opening win at home on Nov. 3 against North Greenville, S.C.

Leading 23-15 after one quarter, CVCC used a 15-0 run to start the second quarter to take control for good against the Golden Bears (1-4, 1-4).

Joyous Wilson added 18 points for the Red Hawks, while teammate Tanisha Wall reached double-digit scoring for the third straight game with 16 points.

Tee Dorsey paced the Golden Bears with 18 points, including 12 in the second half.

CVCC’s next game is Monday at home against the Belmont Abbey junior varsity with a start time of 6 p.m.
