JAMESTOWN – Guilford Tech hit late free throws on Tuesday night, shooting 51 overall, as it beat visiting Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) in women’s basketball, 87-84 in overtime.
Guilford Tech (11-3, 8-3 Region X) converted 29 of its 51 free throws in dealing the Red Hawks (11-4, 6-1) their first conference loss of the season.
The game featured 61 fouls called, 37 of them by CVCC.
CVCC led 73-69 with 54.1 seconds to play, but Guilford Tech guard J’Nai Millner sparked a rally that netted the Titans a tie at 76 at the end of regulation.
In overtime, Jada Faison scored five points and Miller added four points — all on free throws — to help propel Guilford Tech to the win.
Sophomore Nikkyana McCaskill scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Red Hawks — the first 20-point performance in her career – and sophomore Shaniya Lester scored 21 points, recording her team-leading sixth 20-point performance of the season.
CVCC’s next game is Thursday at 6 p.m. at home against Louisburg College. Admission is free.
The Red Hawks were ranked No. 19 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll, which was released prior to Tuesday’s game.
