CHERRYVILLE – Just hours after an earlier American Legion baseball victory was nullified, Maiden Post 240 toughed out one on Tuesday night, closing the regular season at Cherryville with a 1-0 victory in nine innings.
During the day, a question arose about two Maiden home wins in late June against Pineville and that each game of the doubleheader went five innings instead of the usual seven innings.
In a change, Legion changed to seven-inning games for the first time this season, abandoning nine-inning games.
In the end on Tuesday, Area IV Commissioner David Coffey issued a ruling – the first game of that doubleheader was declared a double forfeit, and Maiden’s win in the second game would stand (https://hobbsdailyreport.com/american-legion-baseball/legion-baseball-maidens-record-changed-by-double-forfeit-ruling/).
That reverted the Salamanders’ record to 14-8 overall and 12-6 in the East Division, and they responded at Cherryville High by posting their third one-run victory of the season (3-3 in those type games).
At 12-6 in the East, Maiden will be a No. 2 or No. 3 seed, dependent on how Union County (12-5) does Thursday against Gaston in a game at South Point High.
If Union County wins, it takes the No. 2 seed; if Gaston wins Union County and Maiden tie at 12-6. They split regular-season games but the Salamanders should be the No. 2 seed because they went 1-1 against East champion Shelby, which swept Union County.
The No. 2 East seed gets the No. 7 West seed – Henderson County — in the opening round of the playoffs, scheduled to begin Saturday.
The No. 3 East seed draws the No. 6 West seed (Hickory and Asheville or tied for fourth and Burke County is a game back of both).
Maiden 1, Cherryville 0, 9 inn.
Maiden scored its only run in the top of the ninth inning and won a tight game that included only seven hits, four by Post 100 and three by the Salamanders.
Grayeson Brown (Maiden High) had the game-winning RBI, and the Salamanders’ hits came from Jay Sipe (Maiden), Josh Frye (Statesville Christian) and Mac Beam (Bandys).
Jacob Cauble (Maiden) gained a win after relieving Tyler Laws (Statesville Christian).
Laws worked six innings, throwing 71 pitches, giving up two hits, no runs, walking one and striking out three. Cauble threw three innings and gave up two hits, no runs and walked three and struck out four.
Robbie Cowie (Lincolnton) had two of Cherryville’s hits and Wade Walker (Burns) had one.
Walker suffered a loss in relief of Post 100 starter Noah Eaker (Cherryville), who went seven innings, gave up one hit, no runs, walked three and struck out five.
Walker faced seven batters, allowing two hits and an unearned run. He walked one and struck out two.
